Finding God in the World
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (November, 1989)
Average review score:

Heaven sent messageHaving just read a book on Christian aopolgetics that, instead of reafirming my faith, sent me into a tailspin of doubt, I picked up "Finding God in the World" and felt closer to Him than I have in months. Avery Brooke tells of her spiritual journey step by step, and while it is entirely different from mine, her insights and discoveries are wondrously in line with my own. This was a book that I needed to read and God put it in my hands at the right time.

The Garden Book
Published in Paperback by Penguin Books Ltd (09 October, 1991)
Average review score:

Begin any garden topic with John BrookesThere is no better way to sit out a snowstorm than with any book by John Brookes on gardening or garden planning. A real treat to me is Country Gardening. Mr Brookes, alto British, has an artist's understanding of garden forms world-wide. Not pedantic, many lovely photos, ideas, plant recommendations. Some confusion over common names but he also provides the taxonomic (Latin) names. Master gardeners and enthusiatic amateurs will appreciate.

Get a Grip on Genetics (Get a Grip on)

informativeCreatively written and easy to follow. Well pretty easy to follow for a novice reader of this subject. Illustrations help point out what the text means. You can see the British "accent" in the writing (for us Yanks). Very good book and it seems to cover the material well...rfb&llb

The Golden Goose Book: A Fairy Tale Picture Book
Published in Hardcover by Clarion Books (September, 1992)
Average review score:

Four beautiful retellings of classic tales. Two of my favorite nursery stories growing up were "The Three Little Pigs," and "The Three Bears." Imagine my delight at finding a book which not only has these two classic tales, but, "The Golden Goose," and "Tom Thumb" as well. They are retold beautifully, the writing is emotional and reminiscent of nursery rhymes. The book was originally published in 1905, and the pictures are totally recognizable as being of that era...detailed and descriptive of the story. I can hardly wait for my daughter to be old enough to enjoy this book as much as I do!

The Heart of the Commonwealth : Society and Political Culture in Worcester County, Massachusetts, 1713-1861
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (March, 1990)
Average review score:

Early American History at its BestJohn Brooke's HEART OF THE COMMONWEALTH is an amazing book. Specifically, it is about Worchester County, Massachusetts in the years 1713- 1861. Anyone interested in early Massachusetts history simply must read this book.
But HEART is much more than that. Brooke's book is what historians call a microhistory, a study of a small place that, because it is so attentive to detail, is able to shed light on American History as a whole. HEART OF THE COMMONWEALTH does this, explaining how different political ideologies in the years after Queen Annes War developed into the ideas of Republicanism and Liberalism that are so much discussed by historians in the acadamy today.
Whether interested in Massachusetts, politics, society, or any aspect of early American life, HEART OF THE COMMONWEALTH is a book worth reading. It belongs on the self of everyone interested in the story of America.
